Chapter 19

Crimson stepped into the hall. Security walked toward Mikado and his brother. They teleported elsewhere. Either Mikado was a fool or a genius with those emotional gymnastics he took Nyla through. She surprised Crimson by refusing to leave, when it was clear she wanted to be with that pompous asshole.

“Wonder if La Patron gave permission for them to enter the states?” he murmured before closing the door. Nyla stood in the middle of the room with her arms wrapped around her and head down. He entered the bedroom, where he pulled out the small device that kept shifters of any size from entering the suite. Next, he did a quick scan. Pleased no one planted bugs while they were out of the room, he reached out to Hugo while watching Nyla weep softly.

“Sir?” Hugo answered.

Crimson told him about the brother’s visit, their veiled hints to the purpose of his trip, and their escape from La Patron’s security.

“I’ll update Lightress, since she’s the council leader now.”

That surprised Crimson. “What happened to White Thunder?”

“I don’t know. There’s been no formal announcement, but they kicked several individuals off the council. How did Master Mikado know where you were?”

“I think he traced Nyla’s phone. Late last night, I switched it out with the same model Jenks sent and had him transfer everything before giving it to Keto to destroy. Then, these two show up with questions, trying to get her to leave. I don’t understand why. Does he know something about the men who killed my father? Have Jenks dig deeper into Mikado and his brother, Ivory. What the hell was he here for, anyway?”

Crimson didn’t believe Mikado cared half as much for Nyla as she did for him. The way the dragon weaponized her affections and used them against her turned Crimson’s stomach. Beneath her laid-back veneer lay an unbreakable moral compass. Mikado missed or disregarded her mention of Lightress. Nyla’s choices were never between Crimson and him, but between her commitment to Lightress and Mikado. That’s a different level altogether.

“You’re right. We need to learn more about them. Do you want me to contact Jenks or will you?”

“Since I need to check on the trainees, I’ll talk to him. Get Lightress’ perspective on what just happened with Mikado. I spoke to her this morning, and that’s enough for one day.” He looked at Nyla. She continued standing in the same spot.

“Will do.”

Security knocked on the door. Glad for the distraction in the heavy silence, Crimson checked the peephole and opened it.

“Is now a good time?” Room service held the large tray with their dinner. Crimson’s stomach growled as they entered. Security stood behind them, watching as their food and drinks were placed on the table.

“Smells good. Thank you,” Crimson said.

“Alpha Stone wants to speak with you regarding the two dragon-shifters,” security said.

Crimson wasn’t surprised. “Thanks. I’ll call him now before I eat.”

Security nodded and stepped back. Crimson made the call. Alpha Stone wanted names and information which Crimson supplied. La Patron had not granted Mikado or Ivory access to the States.
